Victorian cast-iron money chest / safe "CANNON" with original key – England – late 19th century
Very fine and rare Victorian money chest or safe, made of heavy cast iron, manufactured in England towards the end of the 19th century.
This imposing safe is executed in richly decorated cast iron with beautiful relief work in the form of leaves and vine motifs on the top and all visible sides. On the lid the name CANNON is cast, a well-known English manufacturer of safes and money chests from the Victorian period.
The safe is equipped with the original brass rotary knob, original lock mechanism and accompanying key. The lock and key function properly. Heavy cast-iron handles are located on both sides.
What is special is the elegant, worn appearance of the cast iron, with the decorative details beautifully preserved. The safe is not only a functional collectible, but also a decorative piece with character for a classical interior, library, office, man cave, or collection of antique ironware.
