Door - 1800-1850 - Bifacial

This solid wood rectangular door, entirely hand-decorated, is vertically structured into four large stacked rectangular panels, framed by thick dark wood moldings that create a Renaissance-inspired coffered effect. Each panel has a cream/ light ochre background, on which geometric, heraldic, and zoomorphic motifs are painted in dark green, brown, and antique gold tones:
Top panel: At the center is a stylized radiating sun enclosed in an octagonal medallion. The four corners of the panel are enriched with symmetrical vegetal details.
Second panel: It houses a heraldic emblem with an outstretched-wing eagle, set inside a perfect circle. The central medallion is flanked on the right and left by two vertical bands decorated with vine motifs and continuous scrolls.
Third panel: It shows a complex geometric composition centered on a finely decorated central diamond, flanked by two smaller circular motifs in the shape of an eye or boss on a dark dotted background.
Bottom panel: It depicts a deer or quadruped lying down in profile, set within a horizontal cartouche with beveled corners. The remaining space is filled with symmetric foliate volutes. The entire painted surface features a patinated, antique finish, with slight abrasions and dark shades along the panel edges that simulate the wear of time and the look of a historic artefact.
This door features rich pictorial grotesque decoration, a classical ornamental style inspired by Italian Renaissance motifs, characterized by the fusion of anthropomorphic, vegetal, and geometric elements arranged in a vertical “candelabra” symmetry. Here are the main visual details of the decoration:
Central Figure (Terminus or Caryatid): At the center stands a nude female figure seen from the waist up, emerging from a volute-based pedestal, with the lower part of the body transforming into geometric elements decorated with pheasant-feather or multicolored scale-like motifs (in blues, greens, and gold). Her arms are open, supporting filaments and garlands.
Vegetal Elements and Fruit: Above the figure’s head unfolds a large composition rich with acanthus leaves, festoons, and baskets full of fruit (such as pomegranates and citrus), classical symbols of abundance and prosperity.
Fauna: On the sides of the central figure, integrated into the vine scrolls, are small birds with golden feathers pointed upward.
Upper Framing: The upper part closes with an arch-like structure formed by concentric circular medallions and geometric elements that frame a vegetal crown with spikes of grain.
Base and Inscription: The figure rests on a classical pedestal with architectural flavor. At the base of the door, a dark horizontal band is visible where a Roman capital inscription is partially legible, where the word “ANNO” is clearly recognizable, typical of the dating of artworks.
Style and Finish: The work appears like a fresco or ancient tempera painting with an intentionally aged surface, marked by a slight craquelé texture and exfoliations that lend the door a rustic and historic charm.
