Golden-bronze double desk in France, 19th century

Magnificent antique double desk inkstand, made of gilded metal with rich relief decoration in Rocaille-inspired style. In terms of design, ornamentation, and construction, the piece is attributable to French production from the second half of the 19th century, probably within the Napoléon III / Second Empire taste, with clear influence from Rococo Revival.

The piece presents a markedly symmetrical composition with a strong decorative presence. The base, with a wavy, moulded profile, is profusely ornamented with motifs of shells, palmettes, volutes, and stylized vegetal elements. In the center stands a large Rocaille-type shell worked in relief, which constitutes the main decorative element of the façade.

The top consists of two hinged lids, decorated with large shell motifs and radial striations. When opened, they reveal two independent inner receptacles originally intended to hold ink. The lids and hinges are functional and preserve the artisanal character typical of an antique desk object.

Era

Second half of the 19th century, approximately 1860–1880.

The aesthetics correspond to the historicist taste of the French Second Empire (Napoleon III), which abundantly recovered and reinterpretated the decorative repertoires of Louis XV and Rocaille.

Style

Napoleon III / Second Empire – Rococo Revival / Rocaille.

The use of large shells, volutes, undulating mouldings, and symmetrical decoration is especially representative of the French decorative objects and desk accessories produced during this period.

Condition

Overall good condition for its age, preserving an attractive old patina.

Natural surface wear and gilding wear, darkening areas, small marks and signs of use and oxidation, especially visible in the interior and contact zones. These signs are consistent with the piece’s age and contribute to its antique character.

The hinges and lids retain their function. The inner receptacles show signs of use and aging.
