Important thick, olive-yellow, iridized crystal cup with a pale straw yellow tone, attributable to Barovier & Toso, Murano, circa 1950.

The cup features a triangular silhouette with rounded corners, achieved through pronounced hot-forming shaping. The deep ribbing follows the development of the form and converges toward the base, giving the work a compact structure and a strong plastic character.

The crystal presents a bright straw-yellow hue and is characterized by numerous gas bubble inclusions distributed throughout the glass mass. The surface iridescence creates mother-of-pearl, golden, pink, and violet reflections, particularly evident inside the piece and on the worked peaks.

The combination of solid glass, gas inclusions, strong modeling, and iridescent treatment is consistent with the experiments developed by Ercole Barovier in the late 1930s and early 1940s. In this phase, the vitreous matter takes a central role in the composition through thickness, light, inclusions, and surface effects.

ERCOLE BAROVIER

Ercole Barovier (Murano, 1889–1974), representing one of the oldest glassmaker families of Murano, was among the main protagonists of the renewal of Venetian glass in the 20th century. He took over artistic direction of the family business in 1926, developing an innovative research on color, matter, and working techniques.

In 1936 the family company merged into Ferro Toso Barovier; in 1942, through a subsequent fusion, Barovier & Toso was born. Throughout his long career Barovier developed some of the most significant experiments in modern Murano glass, from the famous Primavera series to research on iridescences, inclusions, bubbles, gold leaf, and thick glass.

His works gained important international recognition and are today housed in the collections of major museums dedicated to glass and decorative arts.

CONDITIONS

The work is presented in excellent preservation for its age. The base retains the original pontil scar, not ground down. There are three small bruises on the supporting ribs, i.e., limited internal fractures from impact, without material loss and without compromising the structural integrity of the piece. They can be seen in the latest base photographs.
