Jan Kriege (attr.) - Platter - Copper - Amsterdam School 24 cm

A particularly beautiful and collectible piece of Dutch Art Deco metalwork from the period of the Amsterdam School (circa 1920). This red-copper decorative bowl exhibits all the distinctive stylistic features that convincingly point to the work and hand of the well-known metal craftsman Jan Kriege from Woerden.

The bowl is entirely hand-worked by hammering. The most striking and characteristic element is the central motif of three stylized swirl lines (spirals) around a central point. This dynamic whirlwind structure is an absolute signature feature in Kriege's oeuvre.

The central field is surrounded by a finely punched bead border, next to which three pronounced, lightly hammered round bumps/feet have been applied. The broad raised rim showcases the pure, artisanal character of the hammered copper.

The object is in a wonderful, untouched vintage condition. Over the decades the bowl has developed a stunning, deep, dark, warm patina that adds extra depth to the texture of the work.
A rarer and artistically superior design within copperwork from this sought-after period.
