The Kota reliquary is one of the most emblematic objects of traditional Gabonese art, especially among the Kota, Mahongwé, and Obamba. 

The figure, often called Mbulu-ngulu or Ngulu, was placed above a basket containing the bones of important ancestors of the clan or lineage. It served as a guardian and protector of the relics.
