Kota reliquaries, notably called Mbulu-ngulu, are among the most famous sculptures in the ancient Gabonese art. They were placed on top of a basket or a box containing the bones of important lineage ancestors. It/They served as the symbolic guardian of the relics and represented the link between the ancestors and the living. The relics could be consulted during ceremonies, initiations, and important group decisions.
