Virgin and Child with the Apple – Polychrome enamel and 915 silver repoussé and chased – Spain, 19th century
Spanish devotional plaque depicting the Virgin and Child, made in polychrome enamel and mounted in a substantial repoussé and chiseled silver setting, richly adorned with scrolls and vegetal motifs.
The Virgin, haloed on a deep red background, holds the Infant Jesus presenting an apple, a symbolically charged element in Christian iconography: Christ, the new Adam, comes to redeem original sin.
The enamel plaque is held by a serrated silver border. The mount, in a flowing form, features an entirely worked decoration and a stamped geometric border.
Two marks are clearly visible:
- five-pointed star: Spanish guarantee mark associated with silverware;
- maker’s/forger’s mark in a lobed cartouche, the letters of which seem to read "MG" or "M.G.".
The piece is silver with a fineness of 915/1000, a fineness traditionally found in 19th-century Spanish goldsmithing.
