"Philippe Starck (Paris, January 18, 1949) is a French designer of interiors and consumer products.
Starck studied design from the 1960s at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris. In 1965 he won the furniture competition La Villette and in 1968 he founded his first design studio, which specialized in inflatable objects. In 1969 he became, together with Pierre Cardin, director of the company.
Starck has worked since 1975 as an independent interior designer and industrial designer. Thus Starck designed, among other things, a door handle for the German door hardware manufacturer FSB. This model was considered at the time to be a design classic and left a lasting mark on the door hardware industry. One of Starck’s best-known designs is the Moto 6.5 motorcycle for the manufacturer Aprilia.
Together with four other designers he received in 1982 from François Mitterrand the assignment to redesign the presidential private apartments in the Élysée Palace.[6] Starck also became known to the general public thanks to his design of everyday objects, such as the rocket-shaped citrus juicer Alessi Juicy Salif from 1990. For his entire body of work he received the Lucky Strike Designer Award in 2004.
In the early nineties Starck was involved in plans by the Amsterdam-based Stichting Centrum De Waag, which wanted to transform De Waag into a multimedia center. To the dismay of the Nieuwmarkt neighborhood, and of lovers of monuments, Starck designed a glass extension. For this to be realized, however, the foundation went bankrupt."
