Spanish X-frame chair. Spanish, nineteenth century, Renaissance-inspired, in carved walnut wood. Chair with an articulated X-shaped frame, a scissors-type, designed to allow folding and transport. The backrest features an architectural composition, with turned and torsioned side uprights, crowned by an elaborately cut crest rail and sculptural decoration. At the center of the crest rail stands a heraldic-tinged composition, consisting of a shield topped by a crown and flanked by two dolphins affronted, elements with a marked historicist influence. The composition, of a strongly symbolic and ornamental character, evokes heraldic tradition and the nineteenth-century taste for reviving motifs from Renaissance and Iberian aristocratic furniture. Since it is not possible to unequivocally identify the arms depicted inside the shield, the piece is not attributed to any particular family or lineage. The uprights of the backrest feature twisted-column decorations, a hallmark of Renaissance revival, reinforcing the architectural character of the piece. The structure extends to the legs, curved sabre-like, articulated to allow the chair to open and close. The walnut wood, with a warm tone and enhanced by carving, is worked with abundant sculptural decoration, combining architectural, heraldic, and zoomorphic motifs. The carving work gives the piece a markedly scenographic and ornamental character. The type of chair, an articulated X-chair traditionally known as a scissors chair, has Iberian Peninsula antecedents, later revived and reinterpreted by 19th-century historicist movements. In this exemplar, the functional structure is paired with Renaissance-inspired Spanish decoration, revealing the nineteenth-century taste for recreating historical models. The presence of the crowned shield and the dolphins affronted is particularly relevant, giving the chair an appearance of apparatus and possible noble character, although, in the absence of clearly identifiable arms, it is more accurate to understand them as elements of heraldic and revivalist inspiration. A piece of significant decorative interest, representative of nineteenth-century Spanish historicism, standing out for the quality of the carving, the articulated structure, and the heraldic composition of the crest rail.
