Icon - Transfiguration of Christ - Wood

Ancient Orthodox icon representing the biblical feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ on Mount Tabor. In the upper plane, Christ appears glorified and flanked by the figures of the prophets Moses (holding the Tablets of the Law) and Elijah. In the lower register, the composition details the three apostles — Peter, James and John — prostrated on the ground and seized by astonishment before the revelation of the divine light. Hagiographic inscriptions in Cyrillic/Church Slavonic identify the characters at the top and center.

Tempera and gilding on a solid wood panel.

The panel presents an irregular shape cut in the upper zone (architectural), a clear indication that it originally belonged to the Feasts tier of a monumental iconostasis in a church.

Shows natural wear in the polychromy and patina consistent with the piece’s antiquity. Marginal losses of levkas (preparatory plaster) at the panel edges and slight cracks or restorations from the period in the wood, which do not compromise the visual integrity of the central painting.

Accompanies an official document from Estonia authorizing the legal export of cultural goods, issued by the Civil Heritage Protection Board. The presence of this official document is a huge advantage for the auction, as it proves provenance and the legality of the icon’s export.
