Sculpture, Marcolfa (Custode dei confini) - 29 cm - Stone

A particular bust carved in stone that bears the name “Marcolfa,” a term derived from the Germanic markulf (mark, boundary, wolf, guardian of borders) and used to designate a specific group of sculptures, stemming from Celtic tradition, which in ancient times were placed on doors, arches, or in niches inside houses. Like all marcolfe, this one too does not escape the same severe, threatening features, with a grotesque yet peculiar expression precisely to fulfill their protective function: to inspire fear, ward off evil spirits, witches, diseases, and various enemies. Typical of the northern Apennines, they are still found in old private homes or scattered in public places.

The sculpture bears inevitable signs of time. It measures 29 cm in height, 24 cm in width and 19 cm in depth, with a weight of about 12 kg.
