Description
An exceptionally beautiful and rare pair of Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) majolica/barbotine decorative vases from the period around 1900–1910, attributed to the renowned manufacturer Josef Strnact. The vases immediately stand out due to their elegant, organic design featuring double openwork handles and a rich three-dimensional relief of grapevines, leaves, and red berries.
About the Maker: Josef Strnact
Josef Strnact (active around 1881–1930) was a renowned Austrian-Bohemian manufacturer based in Turn-Teplitz (present-day Czech Republic). Teplitz formed, around the turn of the century, the absolute heart of Central European Jugendstil ceramics. Strnact gained international recognition for his high-quality majolica and barbotine, characterized by pronounced three-dimensional nature motifs, rich glaze transitions, and distinctive impressed model numbers on the base. Especially as a rare, complete pair, his work is a beloved collectible on the international antique market.
The vases are finished in a warm brown glossy glaze with a beautiful warm yellow gradient on the body. The inner glaze provides a striking contrast thanks to the characteristic light blue / turquoise finish.
