This ancient Russian icon depicts the twelve feasts that announce the faith of the Church.
Their iconographic representations, placed in the front row of the iconostasis, serve as a continual liturgical-biblical catechesis for the faithful. Among the feasts celebrated on fixed dates we find the Nativity of Mary (September 8), the Exaltation of the Cross (September 14), the beginning of Holy Week, the Ascension and Pentecost.
From the eighteenth century, especially in Russia, iconographic compositions were developed that unite the cycle of the twelve feasts into a single representation, revolving around the image of Easter. The latter, not formally included among the feasts, nevertheless represents its core and fulfillment, acquiring a profound theological significance.
The twelve feasts are: the Nativity of Mary, the Presentation of Mary in the Temple, the Nativity of Jesus, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, the Baptism of Christ, the Entry into Jerusalem, the Transfiguration of Jesus, the Holy Trinity, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Ascension of Christ, Pentecost and the Dormition of Mary.
The central scene takes on great prominence as the Easter message in which are shown: Christ’s descent into Hades, the procession of the blessed toward Paradise awaited by the good thief, the Resurrection of Jesus and the appearance at the Sea of Tiberias.
The limewood panel is in good condition.
