Description from the seller
Royal Delft (De Porceleyne Fles) – Set of 4 hand-painted commemorative wall plates from World War I – Delft – 1916-1920
Set of four antique Delft blue wall plates from the factory De Porceleyne Fles (Royal Delft). These plates are part of the iconic ten-part commemorative series surrounding Dutch neutrality and the end of World War I, designed by lead designer Leon Senf.
All plates feature the distinctive hand-colored mustard-yellow edge with stylized orange blossoms.
The set consists of the following four rare designs:
• "Stays Vigilant" (Year code: 1916): Depicts the Dutch Lion in the Dutch Garden; symbol for mobilization and protection of neutrality.
• "In Future" (Year code: 1919): Depiction with the code (LEX), sword and scales; symbol for the period between the armistice and the peace treaty.
• "1914 - 1919 Through Wisdom, Strength and Reason..." (Year code: 1919): Etagere (erebord) for Queen Wilhelmina with the royal crown and royal monogram.
• "Jan. Versailles 1920 - PAX" (Year code: 1920): Commemoration of the entry into force of the Treaty of Versailles, with doves of peace and a radiant sun.
• Provenance: De Porceleyne Fles (Royal Delft), Netherlands.
• Makers: All plates are fully and officially marked on the back with the apothecary’s bottle motif, the initials '' and ''Delft.''.
• Dating: Featuring the official year letters (including 'AO' for 1919), model number 625 and the personal initials of the master painters.
• Technique: Fully hand-painted earthenware (no transfer/print decor).
Condition/Dimensions:
18.3 cm wide. In very good antique condition. No chips or restorations. As is typical with this type of authentic earthenware from that period, there is very light, characteristic crazing in the glaze, which adds to the antique appearance.
Shipped with extreme care.
