Wall mirror - Gilt wood - Late 19th Century - Louis XV Style

Grand carved and gilded wooden mirror, dating from the last decade of the 1800s.

Featuring substantial dimensions (155x130 cm), in the Louis XV style, it presents a wavy top cornice crowned by a shell-and-acanthus leaves motif, flanked by C- and S-shaped volutes. The lower frieze repeats the same decorative design, closing the composition in a mirror-like and harmonious way.

A unique piece used in the salon or in the bedroom, whether resting on the floor or anchored to a piece of furniture or a chest of drawers, it is an example of Neo-Rococo furniture very fashionable among the upper-middle classes of Northern Italy during the Umbertine period.

The carving is handcrafted directly into the walnut wood, with a deep and vivid modeling typical of high-quality artisanal productions of the era. The gold leaf gilding with the agrafe technique preserves its brilliance on almost the entire frame, while at some small points there are natural losses and abrasions due to time and use.

The object is deliberately unrestored and presents its original patina to enhance its value as an antique. The small red spots that can be seen along the cimasa are due to natural aging with the bole background that emerges over the years. No retouching or re-gilding interventions: it is a mirror for those seeking an authentic piece, true to its time, and not an invasive restoration. The only restoration actions were a cleaning pass for gilded surfaces and a very diluted brush of shellac to polish the patina.

The mirror is the original, recognizable by the characteristic oxidation marks on the plate, and has always been carefully treated and cleaned by the family that has owned it for over 100 years.
