Ancient Greek Canosan polychrome oinochoe with Eros scene, 3rd century BC, terracotta with applied polychromy, 56 × 18 × 18 cm, original with authenticity certificate and TL test, from private collection with legal export under Spanish license.
Description from the seller
Oinochoe with Eros and applied polychromy, Canosa (Apulia, Magna Graecia) - 3rd century BC
Modelled terracotta with applied polychromy.
Dimensions : 56 × 18 × 18 cm.
A magnificent oinochoe from the Hellenistic workshops of Canosa, one of the main centres for the production of funerary pottery in Magna Graecia. It features a pear-shaped body on a ring foot, a tall neck with a trilobite rim and a large vertical handle, embellished with two delicate winged Eros modelled in the round on the shoulders.
The body retains remarkable applied polychromy decoration in shades of pink, white and blue, depicting a Dionysian-inspired scene featuring Eros and a figure riding a panther, surrounded by plant motifs and ornamental bands. The quality of the modelling and the preservation of the original polychromy make this piece an excellent example of the refined Canosa production of the 3rd century BC.
Intended exclusively for funerary use, these vases were objects of prestige associated with Hellenistic beliefs regarding the regeneration and immortality of the soul.
Acquired from a German private collection, G.B in the 80's.
-The piece includes an authenticity certificate as well as T.L. (Thermoluminescence) testing and Spanish export license ( Passport for European Union ).
IMPORTANT: Due to the new laws on the export of archaeological pieces, we have decided to NO LONGER sell outside the European territory for the following countries: SWITZERLAND & UNITED STATES of AMERICA.
For other destinations out of European territory: all our items will be shipped after obtaining a definitive LICENSE EXPORTATION by the Ministry of Culture of Spain. We inform our clients that it may take between

These export fees are fixed on the final auction price, and the tax rate is not applied directly to the total value of the item to be exported, but rather the different percentages by sections are applied to it:

Please note that for far destination (Asia, middle east etc.. ), there will be an additional cost for the shipping.
