China, Tang Dynasty.
Important pair of funerary sculptures molded in terracotta representing bridled horses in a marching pose. The figures feature elegantly arched necks, finely worked heads and carefully defined saddles, reflecting the extraordinary relevance that the horse attained during the Tang Dynasty, a period of cultural splendor and military expansion of the Chinese Empire.
The surfaces retain abundant traces of original polychromy in cream, ochre and reddish tones, characteristic of Tang funerary production.
