The original glass panels remain intact, encasing the lantern to shield the candle flame from wind while illuminating the road and marking the carriage’s boundaries.

An air duct in the upper portion ensures optimal draft, while the hinged back panel provides access for replacing the candle. Originally candlelit, the lantern was later adapted for carbide and kerosene.
