The new Vatican euro coin series, the first issued during the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV, is directly inspired by the pope’s coat of arms, reproduced on the cover with a chalk-like finish and in relief on an ivory background. A deep blue tone highlights the inscriptions and the key graphic elements, evoking the colors of the two heraldic fields of the papal shield. This same color combination will become even more prominent in the new design of the case that will accompany future numismatic issues. It is not merely an aesthetic choice, but a true homage and a direct reference to the new pontificate. The coins contained in the case feature an unprecedented alternation between the portrait of the Pope and the papal shield: the portrait appears on the higher-denomination coins, while the shield appears on the lower-denomination coins, creating a graphic concept never before seen in the history of Vatican coin series. The 2-euro coin also incorporates the distinctive elements of the coat of arms of Pope Leo XIV: the fleur-de-lis, a symbol of purity and Marian devotion, and the heart on fire pierced by an arrow above an open book, which represent Augustinian spirituality and the power of God’s Word to transform the human heart.
