William Eggleston - Portraits - 2016

First edition of William Eggleston, Portraits, published by Yale University Press in 2016 on the occasion of the Eggleston portraits exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Curated by Phillip Prodger, the volume gathers over fifty years of work in portraiture, from the sixties to the most recent production, with about 130 color and black-and-white photographs. Family, friends, artists, musicians and people encountered in everyday life become subjects of images in which Eggleston applies to portraiture his characteristic photographic language: seemingly casual compositions, attention to light and color, unpredictable framing and a particular ability to transform ordinary situations into enigmatic images.
Among the subjects appear Alex Chilton, Ike Turner, Dennis Hopper, Walter Hopps and Eudora Welty, together with numerous less well-known or previously unpublished portraits.
An important volume for understanding a specific aspect of Eggleston’s research and for those who collect the great photobooks of contemporary American photography.
