Description from the seller
Ancient Roman Bronze Theatre Mask Applique
Ca. 1st to 3rd century AD.
Bronze, 47.82 mm, 23.1 g.
Roman theatre adapted Greek drama to a society shaped by civic festivals, imperial patronage, and mass entertainment. Masks identified comic and tragic roles through exaggerated features visible across large venues. Their use as decorative appliques carried theatrical imagery beyond the stage, reflecting the prestige of Greek culture and the popularity of performance throughout the empire.
Provenance: Bought in 2026 at an Austrian auction house; previously acquired at an antique market in Austria in 1990. Purchase invoice on file.
