Ancient Roman Bronze Cochlearium (Spoon).
Ca. 4th-5th century AD.
Bronze, 77.4 mm, 3.3 g.
Bronze spoons known as cochlearia offer a glimpse into Roman dining habits. Their name derives from cochlea, meaning “snail” or “spiral shell,” and their pointed handles are thought to have helped extract snails and shellfish from their shells. Examples from the Thetford and Hoxne hoards attest to the use of this spoon form in the fourth and fifth centuries AD.
Provenance: Bought in 2026 at a Polish auction house; previously in a private collection (further details not documented in our records). Purchase invoice on file.
