Elegant carved and gilded wooden wall shelf in the “cartoccio” style – Baroque/Rococo Revival Florentine, late 19th / early 20th century
Splendid and elegant small wall shelf in the “cartoccio” style, in a refined Italian artisanal craftsmanship (Tuscan/Florentine area), dating from the late 19th century or the first half of the 20th century. The object is entirely hand-carved in solid wood, a feature clearly visible on the rough back, where you can see the typical and fascinating gouge marks impressed by the craftsman to lighten and perforate the structure. The front part features rich vegetal motifs and sinuous acanthus leaves, finished with a splendid warm gold leaf gilding (or mecca) laid over a traditional preparation.
Thanks to its extremely light weight, this shelf is a masterpiece of artistic cabinetmaking, perfect as an accent piece to display small works of art, porcelain, or bronze. A vintage piece of great charm from a family collection.
