Album Amicorum Album dei ricordi manoscritto, a single leather-bound manuscript album from the early 20th century Milanese milieu, circa 1910s, measuring 20 cm high by 14 cm wide and in very good condition.
Description from the seller
Rare Album of Memories/Manuscripts Thought (also called Stammbuch in German-speaking areas) in tooled leather.
Liberty Style / Historian with Metal Closure
Milan, early 20th century.
Fascinating and authentic album of thoughts and memories (Stammbuch) entirely handwritten, dating from the early years of the century. The volume collects numerous pages densely written in ink of the era with elegant handwriting, containing philosophical reflections, aphorisms on life, quotes on the female figure and touching affectionate and familial dedications (including a signature “your Mother”). Inside is also present the evocative trace left over time by a flower or a dried leaf, direct testimony of the romantic customs of the period.
The purpose of the object was not to write a personal diary, but to collect external contributions. As seen in the images, every page features a different handwriting, a date and a different signature. The variety of contributions: friends, relatives and distinguished guests were invited to leave their mark of passage. They wrote cultured quotations, moral maxims, poems or personal compositions. The dates and places written next to the signatures (such as “Milano, 1910”) served precisely to remember where and when the friend had placed their thought. The pressed, dried flower is the archetype of the romantic use of the Album Amicorum, used as a tangible pledge of an encounter or of affection.
External features and binding: Splendid brown leather cover richly embossed and decorated with floral motifs, scrolls, grotesque grotesques in a historicist taste and a central shield emblem. Four metallic corner guards decorated in relief. Rare and elegant side buckle/lock in brushed metal, worked with embossing, perfectly preserved and functional.
Location and dating: The internal texts report precise chronological and geographical indications, including “Milano 29/11/1910” and “15/7/1912,” along with several signatures.
The object is presented in generally very good condition considering its age. The structure is solid, the binding is well secured, and the metal closure works regularly. Inner pages yellowed with time with slight foxing and signs of use that do not compromise the perfect readability of the texts. Several inner pages remain white, ready to preserve the historical integrity of the volume.
A unique piece with great atmosphere, perfect for collectors of paper antiquities, 20th-century manuscripts, or lovers of Liberty-era objects.
Careful shipping and protective packaging to guarantee the volume’s integrity during transport.
