Four complete domino sets made of bone on ebony, originating from France, dating to circa 1850–1900, with original wooden sliding boxes and in good condition.
Description from the seller
A wonderful and unique collection of four authentic antique domino sets from the fin de siècle (end of the 19th century / beginning of the 20th century). The playing pieces are hand crafted according to the traditional 'two-materials' method: a top layer of natural animal bone with precisely inlaid black eyes, mounted on a sturdy base of dark ebony wood (or similar hardwood). Each domino tile is centered with the characteristic metal (brass) spinner (pin). These pins were used back then to allow the tiles to turn smoothly during the game and to protect the softer bone surface from scratches when shuffling. The sets are housed in their original rustic wooden sliding boxes with hand-made wood joints from that period. Some boxes show charming signs of aging such as patina and historical inscriptions/initials on the wood (notably visible on the bottom box), contributing to the unique, historical character of this collection. Specifications: Material of stones: animal bone, ebony/hardwood, brass pins. Packaging material: Original wooden sliding boxes. Dating: approx. 1880 – 1920. Origin: Europe (likely France / Netherlands / Belgium). Number of objects: 4 complete sets (or see note below). Condition: In good, original antique condition with a gorgeous natural patina. No restorations. The sliding mechanisms of the boxes function properly. Shows the usual, characteristic signs of aging and use inherent in toys over 100 years old. See the photos for an accurate impression of the condition. Box 1: 28 stones
Box 2: 28 stones
Box 3: 27 stones
Box 4: 47 stones
