Old Arabic manuscript – Treatise on Grammar and Morphology (Ṣarf) – 20 handwritten pages, XVIIIth century
Interesting old Arabic manuscript devoted to the grammatical and morphological study of the Arabic language, the 5 double leaves are detached, 18cm × 12cm.
The manuscript comprises 20 handwritten pages, copied by hand in black ink. A particularly careful part of the text features rubrication in red ink; technical terms, divisions and numbering appear in red, while the body of the text is drawn in black. Several pages are also bordered by a double red framing line.
The visible content mainly concerns Arabic grammar and morphology (ṣarf): study of verbal forms, conjugations, the imperative, present, letter modifications and different grammatical categories. The successive divisions are clearly marked by red-rubricated ordinal terms.
This is not a Qur’an. Some religious references and phrases mentioning God naturally appear in the text and its examples, but the work on view is above all a linguistic treatise intended for learning Classical Arabic, inscribed in the intellectual and educational tradition of the Islamic world.
The leaves show browning, stains, smudges, small marginal gaps.
