Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Medieval iron knife - dagger with a hand carved bone handle and a bronze crown shaped guard.
The long, narrow single-edged blade gradually tapers towards a pointed tip. At the base of the blade is a compact bronze guard with projecting lobed terminals, providing limited protection for the hand while also forming a decorative transition between the blade and handle.
The grip is made from a single elongated section of bone, shaped with gently tapering sides and a rounded terminal. The iron tang extends into the bone handle, producing a compact and functional construction.
Size: ± 25,7 cm total length
Blade: ± 15,4 cm
Condition: The knife is substantially complete. The bone handle remains stable and shows discolouration, surface wear and minor age-related marks. The bronze guard is preserved, the iron blade displays surface corrosion and losses along the cutting edge. Irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> Knives were indispensable personal possessions throughout the Medieval period and were used for eating, domestic work and a wide range of everyday tasks. Unlike modern table cutlery, individuals commonly carried their own knife in a leather sheath suspended from a belt.
-> Bone was frequently used for knife handles because it was durable, readily available and could be shaped and polished relatively easily. The addition of a bronze guard made this example more elaborate than a simple utility knife and may indicate that it was intended as both a practical implement and a personal accessory.
