al-Kamil Muhammad I (1218-1238 AD).
Dimashq (Damascus) mint.
Dirham (Silver, 23.6 mm, 2.89 g).
Obv: Arabic inscription naming الملك الكامل ناصر الدنيا والدين محمد (“al-Malik al-Kamil, Nasir al-Dunya wa’l-Din Muhammad”) in three lines within a square bordered by lines and pellets; mint-and-date inscription around.
Rev: Arabic inscription naming الإمام الناصر لدين الله أحمد أمير المؤمنين (“al-Imam al-Nasir li-Din Allah Ahmad, Commander of the Faithful”) in three lines within a square bordered by lines and pellets; declaration of faith around.

Al-Kamil Muhammad I ruled Egypt from 1218 to 1238 and was a leading figure in the Ayyubid dynasty. His diplomacy with Emperor Frederick II produced the treaty of 1229, returning Jerusalem to Christian control while preserving Muslim possession of its principal sanctuaries. His dirhams name the Abbasid caliph alongside the Ayyubid ruler, expressing the connection between religious legitimacy and temporal power.
