Pair of important carved and gilt wooden Baroque torchere candlesticks from the 18th century (1750–1800), provenance Siena, Tuscany, Italy, in very good condition with minor signs of wear and age.
Description from the seller
Italy, Siena, Tuscany, Baroque sphere – 18th century.
Important and scenographic pair of carved wooden Baroque torchères/candelabra, hand-carved and richly gilded, conceived as an altar pair and characterized by refined Baroque and Rocaille taste decoration.
The structure presents a complex sculptural articulation with opposing volutes, acanthus leaves, vegetal motifs, cartouches and contoured profiles, developed according to a strongly classical setting.
The carving, particularly vigorous in the lower part, shows a notable search for movement and chiaroscuro contrast.
The gold leaf gilding of exceptional quality, today characterized by a precious patina of time, bears historical marks, losses and areas of wear that reveal the underlying preparation, giving the whole an authentic antique character and unique charm.
Of particular interest are the quality of the carving and the complexity of the terminal volutes, elements that confer a strong decorative presence to the pair and make it particularly suitable for a representational environment, a historic residence, or a private collection of decorative arts.
The works also retain traces of their historical configuration and assembly, while the electrical apparatus visible in the photographs should be considered a later modification, probably made for their reuse as lighting elements.
The presence of the complete pair, with the two pieces conceived as corresponding elements, constitutes a feature of particular collectible interest.
Dimensions: 66 including electrification
Material: carved and gilded wood; metal components and electrical parts from a subsequent period.
Provenance: private collection
Era: attribution XVIII century
Please note all photos as an integral part of the description, ancient ewers and plates displayed on wrought-iron stands original.
