Complete 21-piece set of Royal Doulton Kingsware, produced in England in the early 1930s.
The Kingsware series is recognizable for its characteristic glossy finish in molasses brown tones (Rockingham glaze) and for its multicolored reliefs in ochre, yellow, and olive green, with figures and scenes of traditional and literary character. The pieces also include decorative inscriptions under the glaze.
The lot is especially notable for its complete composition for six place settings, while also retaining the teapot, the milk jug, and the sugar basin with their original lids.
Lot composition
* 1 large teapot with original lid, decorated with the character Sairy Gamp and the inscription “The cup that cheers”.
* 1 large milk jug, decorated with a relief scene of a group of drinkers toasting in a tavern.
* 1 two-handled sugar basin with original lid, decorated with the knight motif.
* 6 teacups, with the relief of Sairy Gamp.
* 6 saucers with the inscription “The cup that cheers”.
* 6 dessert or side plates, of which:
* 3 feature the Sairy Gamp motif and the inscription “The cup that cheers”.
* 3 feature the knight motif and the inscription “Come and welcome”.
Marks
The bases bear the Royal Doulton factory marks corresponding to this period, including the inscription “Made in England” and the Royal Doulton emblem.
The teapot base also bears the letter “G”, corresponding to the artisan/mold mark.
Condition
The overall condition of the set is good, with the glaze maintaining a bright and uniform sheen.
Two small impact-related flaws are observed, both located on the edges:
* a small chip on the edge of one of the teacup saucers;
* a small chip on the edge of one of the dessert plates with the inscription “Come and welcome”, which slightly affects the initial letter “C”.
No cracks or restorations are observed on the teacups, teapot, milk jug, or sugar basin.
