Vintage Japanese Deba & Ko-Deba Knife Set – “Seki Magoroku Ginju (関孫六 銀寿)” & Unidentified Maker – Traditional Japanese Fish Knives

An attractive pair of vintage Japanese Deba-style kitchen knives, consisting of a full-size traditional Deba and a compact Ko-Deba.

The considerable difference in size between the two knives makes this an interesting and practical pairing. The larger Deba has the broad, substantial blade traditionally associated with fish preparation, while the smaller Ko-Deba offers a compact version of the same general knife form.

The larger knife bears the well-known Japanese inscription “Seki Magoroku Ginju” (関孫六 銀寿), while the smaller knife has no clearly identifiable maker's inscription.

Both knives retain the patina, wear, sharpening traces, and other signs of long-term use characteristic of genuine vintage Japanese kitchen tools. They are offered in their present, unrestored condition.

1. Deba – Seki Magoroku Ginju (関孫六 銀寿)

The knife on the left is a traditional Japanese Deba, characterized by its broad blade, substantial profile, curved cutting edge, and pointed tip.

Deba knives are traditionally associated with the preparation and breakdown of fish and are one of the characteristic specialized knife forms of Japanese cuisine.

The blade bears the inscription:

関孫六 銀寿 – Seki Magoroku Ginju

Seki Magoroku is a long-established Japanese kitchen-knife brand of KAI, and the company's current Ginju range continues to include Deba knives in several blade lengths.

This is a vintage example, however, and no claim is made that its materials or specifications are identical to those of the current Ginju series.

Approximate Dimensions

Overall length: approx. 29 cm
Blade length: approx. 16.5 cm
Maximum blade width: approx. 5.0 cm
2. Ko-Deba – Unidentified Maker

The knife on the right is a compact Japanese Ko-Deba (small Deba).

Despite its much smaller dimensions, it retains the characteristic broad-at-the-heel, pointed profile associated with Deba-type knives. Its compact proportions make it an interesting counterpart to the larger Seki Magoroku Ginju Deba.

The maker or inscription cannot be identified with confidence, so it is described conservatively as:

Maker / inscription: unidentified

No attribution to a particular maker or brand is made.

Approximate Dimensions

Overall length: approx. 24 cm
Blade length: approx. 10.5 cm
Maximum blade width: approx. 3.5 cm

All measurements are approximate and have been estimated from the measuring tape visible in the photograph.

Condition

These are genuine vintage, pre-owned Japanese kitchen knives and show clear signs of age, previous use, sharpening, and storage.

Please note the following condition issues:

Age-related dirt and staining
Rust and oxidation
Scratches and scuff marks on the blades
Chips and imperfections along the cutting edges
Chipping / damage to the blade tips
Dirt and staining around the ferrules
Scratches and signs of wear around the ferrules
Dirt, staining, scratches, discoloration, and signs of use on the wooden handles
Other age- and use-related marks and imperfections

These knives have not been fully cleaned, polished, restored, or professionally sharpened and are offered in their present vintage condition.

Please examine all photographs carefully before bidding. The photographs form an essential part of the description and show the actual condition of the knives.

These are not fully restored or maintenance-free modern kitchen knives. Cleaning, sharpening, adjustment, or other maintenance/restoration work may be required before use.

Please bid only if you fully understand and accept the above vintage condition and are capable of cleaning and sharpening the knives yourself as necessary.

The combination of a full-size Seki Magoroku Ginju (関孫六 銀寿) Deba and a compact Ko-Deba of unidentified maker makes this an appealing set for collectors of vintage Japanese cutlery, chefs, sharpening and restoration enthusiasts, and admirers of traditional Japanese culinary tools.
