Description from the seller

Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.

An ancient Egyptian turquoise-green faience openwork amulet bead depicting the Osirian triad of Isis, Horus (in centre) and Nephthys.

The rectangular plaque is modelled in openwork with three standing figures. Horus the Child occupies the central and most prominent position, flanked by his mother Isis and his aunt Nephthys. The figures stand upon an integral base and are surrounded by a distinctive notched or beaded border. The amulet is pierced laterally, allowing it to be incorporated into a necklace or other arrangement of protective beads.

-> The three deities played central roles in the Osirian myth. After the murder of Osiris, the sister goddesses Isis and Nephthys protected his body and subsequently cared for his son Horus. Horus was regarded as the rightful heir who would ultimately overcome Seth and restore divine order.

Size: ± 11,2 x 9,9 x 3,6 mm
Date: Late Period - Ptolemaic period, ca 664-30 BC

Condition: Good condition. The openwork design with the three figures clearly recognisable. Visible wear on one side, minor surface deposits. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.

Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.

-> Triad amulets of this type were intended to transfer the protective care of Isis and Nephthys to their wearer. Just as the goddesses protected the young Horus, they were believed to safeguard the living wearer or assist the deceased in achieving rebirth in the afterlife.

The turquoise-green colour of Egyptian faience was associated with fertility, regeneration and eternal life. Its luminous surface made faience particularly suitable for amulets and funerary ornaments intended to provide continued protection and renewal.
