Saint Nicholas of Myra (Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker), one of the most depicted saints in Russian Orthodox iconography.
Character: Saint Nicholas of Myra, bishop and thaumaturge.
Iconography: he appears as a bishop, with the omophorion decorated with crosses and holding the Gospel in his left hand, while blessing with the right.
Distinctive feature: the face is painted on the panel and the rest is covered by a metallic oklad/riza, leaving visible mainly the face and the hands.
Halo: the large radial halo is also metal and forms part of the ensemble’s decoration.
Style: from the finish of the covering, the type of decoration, and the aging of the panel, it seems to be an object of nineteenth-century Russian tradition.
