Original Montyne View-Master artist drawing, 46 × 36 cm, pen/ink with gouache on illustration board, depicting a beaver and a frog, signed and in very good condition.
Description from the seller
On offer a special artwork pen/ink gouache drawing of a beaver and a frog on large format. Created and signed by Montyne - Sherman Lamont Sudbury (1916 - 1989) - on illustration board.
Throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s, Montyne worked as an illustrator, commissioned artist, sculptor and muralist. But he also worked as a stunt/performance artist doing hand-balancing work. He was hooked on fitness, fencing and sculpting.
He had a famous entertaining act with 38 swords setup pointing upwards where he would balance on 1 hand only above the razorsharp blades. It was a welknown act but later on he would mainly display it in nightclubs for 250 $ fee.
Montyne was briefly a contract artist for View-Master. He created the 3-reel packets Tarzan of the Apes, Beetle Bailey, and the Woody Woodpecker Show. He worked on Tarzan in 1965/1966. The images are very awesome and show great artistic imates with a stunning depth effect. However, as a company Viewmaster wasnt so happy. The story created by Montyne was violent, showed blood, nudity and fights throughout the 21 3D images. These were aimed also at little children who would possibly wake up at night screaming after a nightmare about baby-snatching, murderous gorillas who were after them.
Montyne and family moved to Las Vegas in 1968, so he could sculpt the statues in front of Circus Circus, the legendary themed casino that opened in that year. One of the statues was a selfportrait of him balancing above knifes on 1 finger only.
An interesting man and artist and maker of one of the best viewmaster 3-reel sets ever made - if you are not too scared to view it. On offer an original drawing by Montyne (hard to find!) - 46 x 36 cm - and the Tarzan packet he created.
