The Platinum Koala series was launched by the Perth Mint in 1988 and at the time was among the first and worldwide most successful platinum bullion coins. The koala motif on the reverse has been redesigned each year, which also makes the coins attractive to collectors (numismatists). Since regular production of platinum bullion coins in this series was discontinued in 2000, older years like this carry an additional collector’s premium.
