Mask Djimini / Jimini – Ivory Coast – former Jean Lecluse collection, Liège
Important Djimini (Jimini) mask from Ivory Coast, probably Dabakala region, carved in dense wood with a deep satin brown-black patina.
The female face, very elegant, features large almond-shaped eyes half-closed, a long straight nose, a small protruding mouth and fine geometric scarifications on the forehead and cheeks. The composition is dominated by a spectacular vertical hairstyle formed by four oval buns stacked on a high carved board, a formula documented in the corpus of Djimini/Ligbi masks associated with the Do ceremonial cycle.
The reverse is deeply hollowed and presents numerous peripheral perforations intended for attaching the costume or adornment of the dancer. Beautiful old patina, traces of use and wear consistent with ritual use.
Provenance: former Jean Lecluse collection, Liège, collector and author specializing in African arts. A handwritten collection label preserved inside the mask.
