Casket - Antique Indian document chest with woodcarving – ca. 1900 - Wood, Wrought iron

Special, compact wooden document chest or value box, probably originating from North India and dating to around 1900. The box is richly executed with carved, openwork floral and vine motifs, finished in black, green, red and gold/bronze hues.

The black-lacquered ground, exuberantly carved openwork floral scrolls, red flowers, green leaves and gold/bronze details are characteristic of North Indian decorative wood carving. The design shows influences from the Indo-M Mughal tradition: stylized floral ornamentation, symmetrical scrolls and a central floral rosette.
