AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A pair of Roman bronze Situla handles with fine chiselling

A matching pair of Roman bronze handles from a situla
Roman Imperial period, 1st–3rd century CE

The two nearly identically worked, sturdy ring handles have a semicircular arc and taper toward the ends. Each ends in narrow, elongated ovals (eyelets) bent back and terminating in finely profiled or chiselled terminal knobs. Through these movable ends, the handles were originally connected to the attachments mounted on the vessel body.

The outer sides of the hoops show a restrained linear chiselling, giving a decorative accent to the otherwise functional form. Situlae—bucket-shaped bronze vessels—belonged in the Roman Imperial period to the high-end table and household equipment and could serve different practical and representational purposes.

Particularly appealing is that both accompanying handles are preserved together. The bronze shows a pronounced green to dark-green patina.
