The Canon EF 35mm f/2 is the compact fast prime that has kept its following for decades. On a full-frame body 35mm is the reportage length, wide enough to hold a scene together and close enough to work with a subject; on APS-C it becomes a 56mm standard. At f/2 it gathers twice the light of an f/2.8 zoom and separates a subject cleanly from its background. It weighs only 210g, so it is the lens that stays on the camera when weight matters.
