Description from the seller

Holmes model manual handheld stereoscope with wooden slide - circa 1900 An interesting and authentic portable stereoscopic viewer (stereoscope) from the era, a classic optical device for entertainment built according to the celebrated Holmes-Bates patent and datable to the late 19th century and the early years of the 20th. The peculiarity of this framing highlights the longitudinal structure of the device, characterized by a long solid wooden slide that serves as a guide rail, topped in the center by a thin fixed median partition. This clever mechanical and ergonomic system allowed manually sliding the photographic card holder along the axis, precisely adjusting the ideal focus for the eyes. The upper viewing block houses two square prism lenses, locked by circular metal rings. The wood of the entire structure presents a beautiful, deep original dark patina, evidence of use and the object’s over one hundred years of history. An extremely genuine collectible piece, perfect for collectors of vintage photography, historical scientific instruments, or pre-cinema curiosities.
