Mask - Nepal - 1960-1970 - Painted Nuo opera mask

This mask is hand-carved using the whole wood round carving process. The handmade Nuo mask is also the carrier of the intangible cultural heritage of Nuo opera. It integrates wood carving, color painting, and folk beliefs.
The mask has dark emerald green as the main background color, with vermilion eyebrow fins, lip contours and crown edges. The top of the crown is engraved with a flame crown and painted with orange. The facial details are roughly and vividly depicted: the eyes are round and convex, and the pupils are painted in three layers of yellow, red and white; the nose is plump and plump, and the surface is dotted with yellow scales. The forehead, cheeks and chin are all decorated with hand-painted lines and stippling.
The back of the mask has a plain wooden base and is equipped with red hanging webbing, which can be used directly for wall hanging display. The overall condition is complete, the wooden body has no structural cracks or defects, the painted layer is well preserved, and there is only slight natural wear on the edges and bulges.
