Description from the seller
Set of 19 stereoscopic photographs on glass 6 x 13 cm – Autun, Cluny and Pontigny – September 1923 – Gaumont binder
Fine collection of 19 old glass stereoscopic photographs in the 6 x 13 cm format, preserved with their Gaumont-era binder.
The series is precisely dated September 1923 and brings together two major geographical areas of Saône-et-Loire (Burgundy), perfectly identified thanks to the handwritten captions placed directly on the top edge of the plates.
First is the town of Autun, notably represented by beautiful views of Saint-Lazare Cathedral: the north façade and its north portal, the interior with choir stalls, the nave and the ambulatory, as well as a Romanesque/Gothic sculpted portal.
The series then continues in Cluny with a remarkable set devoted to the ancient abbey and the medieval and Renaissance heritage of the town. It includes the former palace of Jacques d'Amboise (current town hall) with the water-blessing bell tower in the background, the doors of the old abbey, the 15th-century abbey palace, the Fabry Tower from the 14th century, and the towers seen from the Amboise Park.
The handwritten captions visible on the plates allow the following identifications to be read:
Abbey of Pontigny
Autun – St-Lazare Cathedral – North Portal / Sept. 1923
Cluny – Jacques d'Athose's Palace / Small bell tower and water-blessing bell tower / September 1923
Cluny – Doors of the old abbey / Sept. 1923
Cluny – Old abbey palace (15th c.) / Sept. 1923
Cluny – Amboise Palace (16th c.) (Town Hall) / Sept. 1923
Cluny – Fabry Tower (14th c.) / Sept. 1923
Cluny – The towers, seen from Amboise Park / Sept. 1923
A remarkable and highly coherent collection for connoisseurs of early photography, glass stereoscopic plates, and Burgundy heritage history (Autun and Cluny).
