"Preganziol 1983" (SIGNED)

Thirty years ago, in 1983, the Italian photographer Guido Guidi produced a short photographic series, shot inside a room in Preganziol, Italy. The sixteen images that make up *Preganziol, 1983* were taken within the confines of four bare walls. The only source of light comes from two windows placed opposite one another.

"Preganziol, 1983" is, at first glance, a simple exploration of light, an exercise by the photographer in how to define and describe the physical space within a photograph and how light shapes these descriptions. Upon closer observation, the series reveals itself to be multi-layered: the portraits of a room created by Guidi allude to the idea of the camera obscura; the external views recall the Albertian window; the bare walls create an aura of emptiness and abandonment; and the movement of light across the walls symbolizes the passage of time.

Guidi’s skill as a photographer and craftsman of the image is evident here, and this conceptual sequence is animated by a leitmotif that runs through Guidi’s work: emptiness, the awareness that beyond the frame reality continues to unfold, immeasurable, infinite.
