Rare antique Indian window shutters made of hardwood and iron
Description
To the listing comes an extraordinary and very rare antique collectible from the 18th/19th century: A pair of original Indian window shutters (two-leaf system).
These impressive architectural elements were handcrafted in traditional workmanship from robust Indian solid wood (hardwood/teak-type) and equipped with solid forged iron fittings, decorative bands, as well as the original iron bolt. The surface shows a fascinating, authentic patina with wonderful pattern impressions in the wood and historic signs of use that tell a centuries-old story.
Cultural background & special features:
Due to the extreme climatic conditions and the intense heat in many regions of India, window openings in traditional homes (havelis) were often deliberately kept very small. They primarily served to regulate airflow, light, and to protect privacy before the widespread use of glass.
Today, such well-preserved, small window shutters in their original state are hardly found and are in the West in high demand as exclusive wall decorations, historical objects, or for creative DIY mirror projects. A beautiful and characterful gift for lovers of Asian antiques, curiosities, and discerning collectors.
