A large and impressive antique Chinese blue and white porcelain platter, dating to the Early Qing Dynasty, early 18th century, probably Kangxi period.
Of large canted rectangular form, the platter is finely hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue with an elaborate traditional Chinese garden scene. The central decoration features phoenix birds amongst flowering peonies, plantain trees, ornamental rocks and architectural elements, creating a richly detailed garden landscape.
The broad border is decorated with reserved panels depicting pine, bamboo and prunus, traditionally known as the “Three Friends of Winter” (Suihan Sanyou ), set against a dense cobalt-blue ground with further floral decoration.
The reverse is partially glazed, revealing a large unglazed base with visible hand-finishing and firing characteristics consistent with its considerable age.
