French masonic brochure from 1831 by Bailleul, titled De l'état de la Fr. : Maç. : à la suite des événements de Juillet, 30 pages, 20 × 13 cm, first edition in this format, loose-leaf binding, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Rare French Masonic brochure from the early July Monarchy, titled “On the State of the Fraternity: Freemasonry: Following the Events of July.”
The text concerns the situation of Freemasonry in the wake of the July Revolution of 1830. The author discusses the renewal of Masonic activity, the work of the lodges, the Ancient Mysteries, moral philosophy, and the role of Freemasonry in society.
The document provides an interesting testimony on French Masonic thought and life around 1830–1831, a period during which Freemasonry underwent significant transformations. Historical sources indicate in particular that after July 1830 the French Masonic landscape evolved quickly and that 1831 constituted a period of reorganization of the lodges.
Copy preserved under its original paper cover, with an old metal staple visible in the photographs. Paper uniformly aged, with browning, small foxing, stains and handling marks. Some old handwritten annotations are present, notably on the title page. Despite these flaws, the printing is clear and the text remains very legible.
A particularly interesting item for collectors of Freemasonry, of French political and social history of the 19th century, and of printed documents from the July Monarchy."
