Remarkable 40-piece set of early postal history postcards from Algeria (1904–1905) focusing on Military subjects and ethnography, covering Alger, Oran, Constantine, Guelma and Hammam-Meskoutine in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Remarkable collection of postal history and antique postcards (1903-1905) from the same continuous correspondence addressed to Mr. Sigonney, Customs Inspector, and to his family.
This lot of 40 pieces presents great philatelic interest thanks to a beautiful variety of era impressions, issuing offices and colonial postal links:
Marcophilie & Postal History:
Railway/ambulant cancels: very fine convoy impression “ST-CHARLES A CONSTANTINE” with a clear central dater.
Provincial offices and revenues: strikes of Guelma - Constantine, Biskra - Constantine, Souk-Ahras, and various Oran stamps.
Specific Algerian offices: fine impressions of Alger - Bourse (including Bordeaux ink) and Alger - Place du Gouvernement.
Transit and arrival marks: nearly always present on the reverse of the round star-like stamp “RÉGENCE DE TUNIS / TUNIS”.
Stamps of the era: numerous common-use stamps in place on the recto and verso (Type Blanc 5 c green, Semeuse lignée 10 c pink, and Type Mouchon).
Era texts: authentic handwritten correspondences, vivid, including mentions of military service.
Iconography & Colonial Topography (40 cards):
Alger (about 14 pieces): the port, the Admiralty, departures of transatlantic liners (Eugène-Pereire), busy quays, Place du Gouvernement, Rue d’Isly, Casbah and cathedral.
Oran (about 8 pieces): sought-after views of the “Village Nègre,” Bastrana market, Santa-Cruz panorama, Place de la République, Saint-Louis Church, Étang promenade and the town hall.
Constantine, Guelma & Hammam-Meskoutine (about 12 pieces): the Rhummel gorges, El-Kantara bridge, minaret and mosque of Guelma, livestock market, thermal falls and geological curiosities.
Ethnography & Scenes of manners (about 6 pieces): top-tier ND Phot editions with portraits of Moorish women, Moorish children of Algiers, artisans’ interiors and scenes of prayer.
Condition and shipping:
Very good overall preservation; the entire card collection is protected in individual sleeves.
Cards circulated with writings and era stamps. All rectos and versos are reproduced in photographs.
Careful and secure shipment by registered mail with tracking and rigid protection.
