Schlan., a non-coloured copper engraving panorama of Slaný in Bohemia, by Matthäus Merian il Vecchio (1593–1650), published in 1650 in Topographia Bohemiae, Moraviae et Silesiae; 34 x 38 cm; condition Excellent.
Description from the seller
Magnificent and authentic panoramic view in copper engraving (etching) of the royal city of Slaný (German Schlan), located in the Central Bohemia region (currently the Czech Republic). The work was executed by the renowned engraver and cartographer Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650), Swiss-German, and published in Frankfurt in 1650 within the famous volume "Topographia Bohemiae, Moraviae et Silesiae". The view shows the fortified skyline of the medieval town in the mid-17th century, with its characteristic towers, the surrounding walls, and the church spires rising against the backdrop of Bohemian hills, foregrounded by tree-lined settings and finely drawn hilly reliefs. At the top center, the identifying inscription "Schlan" is displayed, surmounted by a heraldic shield/ornamental wreath left originally blank by the publisher. The engraving expresses the typical technical mastery and descriptive detail that made Merian’s urban panoramas among the most famous and sought-after in European cartography of the seventeenth century. A sheet of great historical and decorative charm for collectors of antique views. Dimensions: 34 x 38 cm. It will be shipped by courier.
