Specimen Muracypraea mus (Cypraea mus), 38 mm, GEM quality; Scientific name Cypraea mus mus; origin Venezuela; year 1982; authenticity Original.
Description from the seller
Product description & Scientific data
Scientific name: Muracypraea mus (Linnaeus, 1758) – often listed as Cypraea mus mus.
Common name: Maus-Kauri (English: Mouse Cowry).
Quality grade: GEM (Excellent condition; highly glossy enamel on the dorsal side, sharply defined basal teeth and no scratches, chips or growth defects).
Size: 38 mm (3.8 cm). The species typically reaches sizes between 26 mm and 61 mm. Individuals around 38 mm are considered fully developed, compact adults, which due to their rounded symmetry are often especially aesthetically pleasing.
Morphology: Characterized by the bumpy, mouse-gray to cream-colored shell shape with the distinctive dark brown spots or line patterns on the dorsum and a light underside.
Family: Cypraeidae (cowries).
Origin & Habitat
Geographic origin: Southern Caribbean, endemic to the coastal regions of Colombia and especially Venezuela (famous populations live in the Amuay Bay).
Habitat: A marine shallow-water species that usually lives in muddy sand or seagrass beds in sheltered bays at depths of 1 to 10 meters. Because export from these regions is often politically and logistically difficult, good specimens on the market are highly sought after.
